Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German schrīten, from Old High German skrītan, from Proto-Germanic *skrīdaną, *skrīþaną (to step; stride). Cognate with English shrithe (to go about; roam; creep), Icelandic skríða (to creep; crawl). More at shrithe.
