Borrowed from Greek σχολείο (scholeío) possibly through a Slavic intermediate, ultimately from Ancient Greek σχολεῖον (skholeîon), from σχολή (skholḗ, spare time, leisure; later; conversations and the knowledge gained through them during free time; the places where these conversations took place).
