From New Latin sēpticaemia, from Ancient Greek σηπτικός (sēptikós, septic) (from σήπειν (sḗpein, to putrefy)) + αἷμα (haîma, blood) + -ia (suffix forming abstract nouns);[1] compare septæmia.
