English [edit]
Etymology [edit]
Japanese 柳葉魚 (ししゃも, shishamo, literally “willow leaf fish”) (kanji are ateji, or rather jukujikun), from Ainu susam, presumably from susu (“willow”) + ham (“leaf”). “Willow leaf” is due to the fish’s slender shape, similar to the shape of a willow leaf.
