From Medieval Latin siruppus, syrupus, from Arabic شراب (šarāb, a drink, beverage, wine, coffee, syrup), from شرب (šáriba, to drink). Related to sorbet, sherbet. Compare French sirop, Italian siroppo, Spanish jarabe, jarope, Portuguese xarope.
