Etymology[edit]

The origin of this and related words (skrýtilegur, skrýtilyrði, skrýtla) is uncertain. The original stem vowel is uncertain, as the phonetic merger of í and ý predates their earliest attestation in Icelandic. If the ý is original, it may be related to Norwegian skryten (scrawny), dialectal Swedish skryten, skruten.
