Latvian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A borrowing from Middle Low German slicht ("plain, simple, common, without value, inferior, inappropriate"), or from Middle Dutch slicht (simple, common); cf. German schlecht (bad, evil). First found in 17th- and 18th-century dictionaries, still marked as a germanism; at that time, the word mentioned as a translation for German schlecht was nelietis (now a noun meaning “villain,” “scoundrel”).[1]
