English[edit]

Noun[edit]

smeuse (plural smeuses)

  1. A hole made in a hedge by the passing of a hare or other animal.
    • 1878, Edward Pennell-Elmhirst, The hunting countries of England, a guide, by Brooksby, page 57:
There is usually a comfortable hole in one corner, which the old hands know as readily as a hare does a smeuse.
    • 1927, Nicholas Everitt, Ernest Ivens Watson, Shots from a lawyer's gun, page 311:
A few spots of Renardine dropped in a smeuse or gateway will prevent hares passing through. Gate netting and snaring are impossible where this is done.
