Probably from Proto-Germanic *smiþōną (to forge, fashion), then cognate with Old English smiþian, Old High German smidōn, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌼𐌹𐌸𐍉𐌽 (gasmiþōn). Another possibility is derivation from Old Norse smíð (crafting, making).
