From Old Norse sneiða, from Proto-Germanic *snaidijaną (to cut, slice), causative of Proto-Germanic *snīþaną (to cut), from Proto-Indo-European *sneyt- (to cut). Cognate with Old English snǣdan (to cut into slices).
