Etymology[edit]

soap +‎ berry: the fleshy part of the fruit was used in washing linen.

Noun[edit]

soapberry (plural soapberries)

  1. (botany) Any woody plant of the genus Sapindus, which is eponymous of the Sapindaceae family
    Most soapberries are tropical.
  2. The fruit of such a plant, especially of the tree Sapindus saponaria.
    Soapberries are rich enough in saponin to be used as soap substitute, hence their name.
