speed bump (plural speed bumps)

  1. A traffic calming measure, consisting of a transverse ridge in the road, to limit the speed of vehicles.
  2. (figuratively) An obstacle or difficulty; roadblock; snag.
  3. (finance, high-frequency trading) Any technical measure taken by an electronic financial exchange to deliberately delay orders by microseconds or milliseconds.
