  1. a young tree, especially one reserved when others are cut.
    • 1957: It was ordered that twelve standels or storers per acre in coppices or underwoods of twenty-four years' growth or less should be excluded from felling, and twelve 'great trees' on every acre above twenty-four years' growth. — H.R.
