From Proto-West Germanic *stalkungu, from Proto-Germanic *stalkōną (to stalk, move stealthily), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)telg, *(s)tolg-.[1] Equivalent to *stealcian (to stalk) +‎ -ung. Compare Old Frisian stalkense (stealthiness).
