From Proto-Germanic *stirnō (“forehead”), from Proto-Indo-European *stern- (“forehead, chest, side”). Cognate with Old High German stirna (German Stirn, “forehead”), Middle Low German stērne (“forehead”), Middle Dutch stern(e) (“forehead”), Ancient Greek στέρνον (stérnon; Modern Greek στέρνο, “chest”).
