From Proto-Slavic *stolъ (table), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *stalas (table). Most Slavic cognates of this word mean table rather than chair, except Old Church Slavonic столъ (stolŭ, seat, throne) and Bulgarian стол (stol, chair). The fact that the Sorbian word means chair rather than table is probably due to the influence of German Low German stol and German Stuhl.
