Etymology[edit]

From Vulgar Latin *suggluttiare or *subgluttiare, from Latin singultāre, from singultus. The Latin was probably influenced by gluttīre. Compare Aromanian sugljits, sugljitsare, Spanish sollozar, Portuguese soluçar. Compare also Italian singhiozzare, from singlutiāre, from singultāre and French sangloter.
