Conjugation[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse svara (to answer). Confer svar (a response).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

svara (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative svaraði, supine svarað)

  1. (intransitive) to answer, to respond, to reply syn.
    • Isaiah 40 (Icelandic, English)
Heyr, einhver segir: "Kalla þú!" Og ég svara: "Hvað skal ég kalla?" "Allt hold er gras og allur yndisleikur þess sem blóm vallarins. Grasið visnar, blómin fölna, þegar Drottinn andar á þau. Sannlega, mennirnir eru gras. Grasið visnar, blómin fölna, en orð Guðs vors stendur stöðugt eilíflega."
A voice says, "Cry out." And I answer, "What shall I cry?" "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."
  2. (transitive, governs the dative) to answer somebody, to respond to somebody syn.
  3. (transitive, governs the dative) to answer with something, to respond with something syn.
  4. (ditransitive, governs the dative and the dative) to answer somebody with something, to give somebody some response, to answer somebody's question, to respond to somebody's comment syn.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The past participle form is very rare.
  • The difference to the word besvara lies in that svara concerns answers or responses to people, while besvara (or in some cases svara + certain particles) concerns answers or responses to questions, telephone calls and so on:
Att besvara en fråga. (= Att svara på en fråga.)
    To answer a question.
Svara inte i telefonen när det åskar!
Don't answer the phone during a thunderstorm!
    Svara honom inte!
    Don't answer him!
