Etymology[edit]

From Japanese 将軍(しょうぐん) (shōgun), from Middle Chinese compound 將軍 (MC tsjang kjun). The “shogun” sense is originally short for 征夷大将軍(たいしょーぐん) (taishōgun, literally general who overcomes the barbarians).
