Verb[edit]

týna (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative týndi, supine týnt)

  1. to lose (objects)

Conjugation[edit]

Derived terms[edit]

  • týna [einhverju] niður (to forget [something] which was previously known, specifically something which had been learnt)
Ég tala ekki mikla frönsku, og ég er búin að týna niður því litla sem ég kunni.
I don't speak much French, and I've forgotten what little I knew.
  • týna lífi (to die- most often used for fatalities occurring in warfare or by accident)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The imperative mood of the verb týna (týndu) is most often used with a negative (the word ekki).
  • It's not possible to "lose" insubstantial things like von ("hope") gleði ("joy"). For that the word missa would rather be used. (the exception to this is the phrase týna lífi meaning literally "to lose [one's] life" that is "to die").
