Possibly from Vulgar Latin *tastō, *tastāre, from taxitō, frequentative of Late Latin taxō, from Classical Latin tangō (I touch). Compare Venetian tastar, Italian tastare, Catalan and Occitan tastar, Old French taster, Sicilian tastari.
