Etymology 2[edit]

Short for Chinese 土地神 (thổ địa thần) or 土地公 (thổ địa công, literally land lord; land duke), popularized by the 1986 Chinese TV series Journey to the West, based on the way the main character Sun Wukong calls on "land spirits" for intel, usually on the local monsters that have kidnapped his master Xuanzang.
