From Middle English *thurgh-gang, from Old English *þurhgang (“a going through, permeation”), equivalent to through- + gang. Compare Old English þurhgangan (“to go through, go over”), Old High German durhgangan, Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌷𐌲𐌰𐌲𐌲𐌰𐌽 (þairhgaggan).
