- Begins editorial parenthetical comment, i.e., a comment by someone other than the original author/speaker of the utterance into which the comment is inserted. It is analogous to an open square bracket.
- The comment begun with to'i can be ended with the elidable terminator toi.
- If the comment occurs within a lu ... li'u quotation, then to'i should be appended immediately with sa'a if the comment itself is not part of the utterance/text being quoted.
