Etymology[edit]

From Old Irish tosach (beginning), from Proto-Celtic *towissākos, from either Proto-Indo-European *wedh- (lead) or weid- (“know, see”). Akin to Irish taoiseach. Compare Scottish Gaelic toiseach/tòisich.
