From Middle Dutch verliesen, from Old Dutch *firliosan, from Proto-Germanic *fraleusaną. Cognate with Old English forlēosan (English forlese), Old High German farliosan (German verlieren), Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌻𐌹𐌿𐍃𐌰𐌽 (fraliusan).[1]
