Etymology

Probably from an unattested *vetë, *vehtë - to blow (of wind), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁- (to blow). Cognate to Serbo-Croatian vetar (wind), Ancient Greek ἀτμός (atmós, vapour, steam), Lithuanian vėtra (storm), and others.
