From German Witwe and Latin vidua, both ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁widʰéwh₂ (widow). Germanic cognates include English widow, Dutch weduwe, West Frisian widdo, while Romance cognates include Italian vedova, French veuve, Spanish viuda, Romanian văduvă.
