Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *vièsienta, from Proto-Indo-European *heu̯i-ĝh- 'to burn'. Compare Latin aestas (summer), Gothic asans (asans, harvest time) and Old English ast (dried stove). Pokorny makes a connection with Latin goddes Vesta (and her Greek equivalent Εστία), which he considers of Illyrian origin[1].
