From Old Frisian waska, from Proto-Germanic *waskaną (to wash, make wet), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wod- (water; wet). Cognate with Saterland Frisian waaske, English wash, Low German waschen, Dutch wassen, German waschen, Danish vaske.
