From the noun wit (literally, "knowledge, wisdom"; see witty, wits, witan) + -ness, akin to Old Norse vitni (whence the Danish vidne and Bokmål vitne) and Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍄𐍅𐍉𐌸𐍃 (weitwōþs).
