Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Orel, from Ancient Greek αἰγιαλός (aigialós, river bank), borrowed as Proto-Albanian *aigjala,[1] but the initial z- remains unexplained. Çabej considers it an inherited word.[2]
