From *džotnja, from Proto-Albanian *dzwāptnjā, from earlier *w(i)tspátnjā, from Proto-Indo-European *u̯iḱpotni̯eh₂ ‘clan matriarch’ (compare Lithuanian viešpatni ‘lady’), compound of *u̯iḱ- ‘clan, kindred’ (compare Ancient Greek οἰκία (oikía) ‘house (clan)’, Avestan viθ- ‘royal court’) and *potni̯eh₂ (compare Ancient Greek πότνια (pótnia)), feminine of *potis ‘master’.
