From Middle Dutch suvel, from Old Dutch *sūval (food eaten with bread), from Proto-Germanic *suflą (entremets, viands). Cognate with Middle Low German sûvel (dairy products), Old High German suvil, sufili, sufila, Old English sufl, sufel, sufol (sowl). More at sowl.
