From Middle Dutch suur, from Old Dutch *sūr, from Frankish *sūr. The adjective is from Proto-Germanic *sūraz (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sūr-), and the noun from *sūran. Compare Low German suur, West Frisian soer, German sauer, English sour, Danish sur.
