Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Latin Aethiopia, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek Αἰθιοπία (Aithiopía).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /e.tjɔ.pi/
  • (file)

Proper noun[edit]

Éthiopie f

  1. Ethiopia (a country in East Africa)

Usage notes[edit]

  • In older French practice, capital letters did not take diacritics, so É becomes E. This was mostly done because of technical constraints. Formal orthotypography maintains the diacritics.
