From Old French escarlate (scarlet cloth), from Medieval Latin scarlatum (scarlet cloth), via Persian سقرلاط (saqerlât, a warm woollen cloth), a variant of سقلاط (seqellât, scarlet cloth) from Byzantine Greek σιγιλλᾶτος (sigillâtos), ultimately from Latin (textum) sigillātum.
