Etymology[edit]
Coined by Jan Svatopluk Presl in the 19th century based on Polish czołg (“tank”) from czołgać się (“to creep, to crawl”).[1][2]

Usage notes[edit]
This term is used only for some genera (e.g. Lissotriton or Triturus) of the family Salamandridae. For other species of newt, the word mlok is used.
