Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from French champignon (possibly through German Champignon)), which comes from Vulgar Latin *campāniolus (“growing in the field”), derived from Latin campānia (“field”), from campus (“field”).[1] Compare šampion, kemp or kampaň.
