From Proto-Indo-Iranian *átʰarwā. Ultimate origin is uncertain; possibly from the BMAC substrate. Compare Avestan 𐬁𐬚𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬥 (āθrauuan), Sanskrit अथर्वन् (atharvan).
