Probably from Proto-Hellenic *galawos, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵh₂lōws. Cognates include Old Church Slavonic зълъва (zŭlŭva) (Russian золовка (zolovka)), Latin glōs, Phrygian γέλαρος (gélaros) and Old Armenian տալ (tal).
