From Proto-Hellenic *deiknéumi, from Proto-Indo-European *deyḱ- (to show, point out) +‎ -νῡμῐ (-nūmi), from Proto-Indo-European *-néwti. Cognates include Latin dīcō, Sanskrit दिशति (diśáti) and Old English tǣċan (English teach).
