Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from German Assistent, from Latin assistens.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ɐsiˈstɛnt]
  • Syllabification(key): а‧си‧стент
  • Hyphenation(key): асис‧тент
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

асисте́нт (asisténtm (feminine асисте́нтка, relational adjective асисте́нтски)

  1. assistant professor (entry-level academic position in higher education)
  2. a skilled assistant, e.g. a director's assistant, a surgical assistant, an assistant conductor, etc.
  3. assistant (software tool)

Usage notes[edit]

In Bulgaria, an асистент (in the academic sense) may either work as a lecturer at a university, or as a researcher at a science institute. They have not completed all habilitation criteria, such as defending a doctoral thesis and having a significant body of work. Progressing to гла́вен асисте́нт (gláven asistént, chief assistant professor) requires a doctorate.
