From Volga Turki آغاچ (ağaç, tree), from Common Kypchak *ağač ("tree, wood", see the Kypchak cognates below), from Proto-Turkic *ïgač (tree; wood).

Cognate with Tatar агач (ağaç), Kazakh ағаш (ağaş), Karakalpak ағаш, Karachay-Balkar агъач (ağaç), Kumyk агъач (ağaç), Southern Altai агаш (agaš); Kyrgyz жыгач (jıgac), Khakas ағас (ağas), Old Turkic 𐰃𐰍𐰲 (iǧč /⁠ïɣač⁠/), Crimean Tatar, Turkish ağaç, Azerbaijani ağac, Turkmen agaç, etc.
