[edit]From *bölmä (“division, separation; room”), from Proto-Turkic *bȫl- (“to divide, separate”).
Synchronously analyzable as бүл- (“to divide”) + -мә (suffix forming an abstract noun related to the action's process or result).
Cognate with Kazakh бөлме (bölme, “room”), Kyrgyz бөлмө (bölmö, “room”), Uzbek boʻlma (“room; division”), Uyghur بۆلمە (bölme, “room”), Karachay-Balkar бёлме (bölme, “division, department”).
