Ukrainian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic ложити (ložiti), from Proto-Slavic *ložiti. Causative of лежа́ти (ležáty). Cognate with Russian ложить (ložitʹ), Belarusian лажыць (lažycʹ), Czech ložit, and Polish łożyć.

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

ложи́ти (ložýtyimpf (perfective положи́ти)

  1. (colloquial, proscribed) to lay, to put, to place
    Synonym: кла́сти (klásty)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The imperfective form ложи́ти (without any prefixes) is considered non-standard in modern Ukrainian. The verb кла́сти (klásty) should be used instead.
  • Ложи́ти is often used colloquially (sometimes much more often than the standard класти (klasty)).
  • The prefixed forms of ложи́ти are considered standard and are sometimes used as perfectives for the derivatives of -клада́ти (-kladáty) in parallel with the prefixed forms of кла́сти (klásty) (e.g. заложи́ти (založýty) can act as a perfective for заклада́ти (zakladáty) alongside закла́сти (zaklásty)), however the prefixed forms of ложи́ти and класти (klasty) are often not identical in meaning (compare обложи́ти (obložýty) and обкла́сти (obklásty)).
