Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *čonda~*šonda, possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *šinta (price, value), borrowed from Proto-Baltic *śímta (hundred) (whence Lithuanian šimtas). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm, and thereby a distant doublet of Erzya сядо (śado, hundred).

Other cognates include Finnish hinta, Estonian hind (price).
