Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish چارشاف (çârşaf, bedsheet; large veil coveing the entire body), from چادر شب (çâdır-ı şeb), from Persian چادر شب (čâdar-e šab).

The meaning 'act in theater' is secondary to 'theater curtain'.

Cognate with Tatar чаршау (çarşaw, curtain), Uzbek choyshab (bedsheet), Turkish çarşaf (bedsheet, large veil).
