Etymology[edit]

From Classical Syriac ܐܦܣܩܘܦܐ (ʾeppisqoppā) or a variant thereof, whence Persian سکوبا (sokubâ) might have been derived via Middle Persian *uskōpā, a borrowing of Ancient Greek ἐπίσκοπος (epískopos).
