Etymology 1

From Middle Persian [script needed] (tng /⁠tang⁠/, “narrow, tight”), from Proto-Indo-European *tenk- (“to compact”), perhaps from *ten- (“to stretch”). Cognate with تنجیدن (tanjidan, “to squeeze”), as well as Old Armenian թանկ (tʻank), an Iranian borrowing.
